When asked what advice Tom would give up and coming ag leaders, he responded, “Understand what a grower has to do. ‘Book smart’ can be tough to translate to ‘on-farm’ experience. Get as much technical knowledge as possible.”
Indeed, the Deardorff family is committed to the community, particularly youth and promoting fresh produce. They support the Boys and Girls Club, ‘Story Telling,’ a reading program in which Tom’s wife, Suzanne, is actively involved and, of course, school gardens. “We want to help people understand where their food comes from and the benefits of agriculture: social, economic, environmental and health-wise. This is our biggest challenge and our biggest opportunity.” Tom pauses for a moment, deep in thought, “What’s the quote?” he asks and then remembers, “The best way to appreciate a farmer is to grow your own food.”
