Deardorff Family Farms

Deardorff-Jackson was formed in 1937. In the early days, Deardorff-Jackson did not farm themselves but rather represented many farmers in the So Cal area: from Venice (the celery capitol of the United States) to San Diego to San Pedro to Hollywood.

Fourth Generation

When you come from three generations of produce businessmen – W.H. Deardorff, W.W. Deardorff, Bill and Tom Deardorff, could Tom Deardorff, II ever ponder any other line of work? “It was not as predestined as you might think,” says Tom. “My dad encouraged all of us to pursue outside experiences. His theory was if his kids wanted to come back, they should bring something unique and new to the company.”

Tom received his law degree and practiced law for a few years before returning to the family business. Does he miss law? “I miss the analytical side of things, but I don’t miss billing hours and I am certainly glad for the strong business foundation my law experience has provided me.”

Helping Friends in Need

Since the days of Tom’s great grandfather, the Deardorff business has embraced hard work, commitment to the community, and respect for the land and the people with whom they work.
Many of Deardorff’s customers/farmers were Japanese-Americans and, during World War II were relocated to internment camps. The Deardorff family took over the management of their customers’ land, leasing them out to other growers and holding them in trust, so when the farmers were released, they could return to their property. Deardorff Family Farms still maintains close relationships, both personnel and business, with those growers.

Giving Back

When asked what advice Tom would give up and coming ag leaders, he responded, “Understand what a grower has to do. ‘Book smart’ can be tough to translate to ‘on-farm’ experience. Get as much technical knowledge as possible.”

Indeed, the Deardorff family is committed to the community, particularly youth and promoting fresh produce. They support the Boys and Girls Club, ‘Story Telling,’ a reading program in which Tom’s wife, Suzanne, is actively involved and, of course, school gardens. “We want to help people understand where their food comes from and the benefits of agriculture: social, economic, environmental and health-wise. This is our biggest challenge and our biggest opportunity.” Tom pauses for a moment, deep in thought, “What’s the quote?” he asks and then remembers, “The best way to appreciate a farmer is to grow your own food.”

Personal

Tom Deardorff, II married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne. They have three children: Jack, William and Kate, (7, 5, and 2 respectively). They enjoy family time and sports – baseball and skiing – and just being together. The Deardorffs love and respect where they live and appreciate every day in the beautiful Oxnard area.
