History

The black raspberry is from North America, and the red raspberry if from Asia Minor and grown in Europe.

Today

The red raspberry is grown in the United States, because it is more cold-tolerant, less prone to diseases, and higher yielding. Black raspberries are usually grown in home gardens or small retail farms. Purple and yellow raspberries have small production.

Season

The raspberry season ranges from April to November.

Ripeness

Fresh raspberries are red in color, have shine, and a hollow center. Pick raspberries that are dry and unblemished. Juice in the package may indicate mold or crushed berries. Avoid raspberries that are watery, wrinkled, or mushy.

Storage

It is important to eat raspberries as soon as possible after purchase. They are delicate and highly perishable. If stored in the refrigerator in a dry, sealed contatiner, they may last up to a week.
