History

History

The term plum refers to varieties belonging mainly to the Japanese plum group, Prunus salicina, used for fresh consumption and not for drying. The Japanese plum is native to China, but was domesticated in Japan 400 years ago. It was first brought to California from Japan in 1870.

Most Japanese plums grown in the United States are grown in California.

Ripeness

Select plums that are smooth, plump, and fairly firm with colour that is consistent with the specific variety.

If unripe, ripen at room temperature.

Storage

When ripe store in the fridge and use within 5 days.

Plums are high in carbohydrates, low in fat and low in calories. Plums are a source of vitamin A, magnesium, iron, potassium and fiber. Plums are free of sodium and cholesterol. Like most fruit, plums are a good source of vitamin C.

Plums contain sntioxidants that protect teh eyes from macular degenration and caracts.
